When founder John Catalano decided he wanted to open a Oriens Cafe in Greece, he wanted to create a family run business that reflected the feel of Cafes from his homeland. He called a friend of his who operated the same kind of Cafe in Lercara Friddi Sicily Italy. That friend, Salvatore Garofalo, who is one of the best pastry chefs in Italy was asked if the same type of operation could be created in Rochester and he said "lets try". John brought Salvatore here to consult with him and opened Oriens Cafe 8 years ago.
Oriens is the latest in a line of several local business that John has created in Rochester, including a beauty salon in Mid-town Plaza, a Travel agency, and the local TV station, Rochester First International which runs on channel 17 on Time Warner. He has also been involved in local Italian festivals and sports events for many years. Recently John has published a book "Thoughts by Gianni Catalano" that is filled with musings about his faith and love of life.
